Want to be A Star! YouTube is the way to roll!

I came across this article and thought it was really interesting how YouTube has become such a phenomenon in our day and age. Daily new stars are born just from posting videos of themselves in funny situations.  And it’s amazing to me how one video can gain a multitude of hits --- and from there a star is born!
For example have you seen the Antoine Dodson video?

He was on the news for saving his sister from a rapist. A group auto tuned his video and TA-DA a star was born. Antoine can be seen at award shows (BET Hip Hop Awards) – he has his own milkshake, and I phone Application, Barbie Doll, T- Shirt Line,  and he even had Halloween costumes!

Or Starlet takes a tumble – she now has a record deal!
Doesn’t this make you want to buy a video camera and tape the funny things your friends do?
I say try it.  You never know whose watching!

  1. I agree with all of this. There are so many uses for YouTube now, but you never realize how popular it is until you can talk to almost anyone about one video and they'll know exactly what you're talking about. Now that LimeWire is gone, I wouldn't be surprised if it started to expand even more.

I think this rapist song, although pretty entertaining, is so ridiculous. It's an itunes song now, and it's so amazing to me that a little technology can make a person, or video in this case, so famous. So much talent has been discovered on YouTube, and for that reason I think it is very useful to our generation. However, I think it's easy access can be dangerous too. I'm reading an article about it for our discussion and it talks about how YouTube can serve as a venue for cyberbullying. After talking about this in class a little, does anyone agree?

  2. I definitely think that YouTube can lead to people being "discovered." For instance, Justin Bieber started by posting his videos on YouTube and now he's absurdly famous. It's crazy how popular these videos get! The double rainbow video cracks me up too! But I have to agree with Sarah that it could also be a venue for cyberbullying. Whenever you post something online, you're opening yourself up to criticism. Hopefully people are aware of that before they post things and are able to not take comments too personally. That'd be in an ideal world, and lots of people have probably experienced bad feelings because of things that people have commented on their videos.

  3. YouTube has really spread like wildfire! It's crazy how much you can find on there and how many people get discovered. Whenever I see a video of someone singing or doing something really well I make sure to comment and tell them how much I enjoyed it. Hopefully put a dent in any negative comments they get. It takes a lot to put yourself out there for all of the world to see on YouTube so I'd bet it's really crushing to read mean comments from strangers.

  5. Wait, people can get paid for their youtube videos if they are good enough? that's just crazy! I realized that people could become "famous" for their random videos and then they may be offered other sorts of jobs and gigs that would pay as a result, but I didn't realize you can get paid for the number of hits you receive.

I don't really like how this works. I think that people are getting famous for the wrong reasons via YouTube. For example, it was great that Antoine Dodson saved someone from getting raped, and I think it was great that his story got out there on the news and was appreciated. However, I don't understand why people designed an Antoine Dodson Halloween costume. Was it because the way he said, "We got your t-shirt, you done left finger prints and all. You are so dumb! You are really dumb, for real!" I mean, the way he said this was funny, but is it really worthy of action figures, costumes, etc.? And this video "Scarlet takes a tumble" just seems sort of mean. Isn't it making fun of her for filming herself singing alone on a table and then falling? (That looked incredibly painful, by the way). And she got a RECORD DEAL FOR IT?

It scares me to see what people are buying into these days...
